Yes! All our opals are 100% natural and solid. Most of our opals come from Lightning Ridge, Australia. All our opals are Australian.
We don't sell doublets or triplets. Doublets are opals that have a layer of potch or something of a similar nature deliberately added to it. Triplets have three layers in total.
Black opal is a variety of precious opal with the most brilliant colour. It is the most valuable opal in the world and highly rare. It gets its name due to its black to dark body tone (or background colour). The black body tone highlights the multiple colours in the opal generally making it a brighter more captivating display.
Lightning Ridge, Australia is the home of Black Opal.
White opal (sometimes called milk opal) is the most common of the precious opal, but the highest quality is both rare and valuable. It has a white base colour containing the 'play of colour'. The most sought after white opals are those containing red and then blue and green.
Sometimes people treat white opal with heating, a sugar solution and acid in the hope the base colour darkens to bring out the play of colour. We don't ever do this to our opals. They are all untreated, 100% natural and solid.
Crystal Opal is the opal industry term for opal that is transparent. Most crystal opal is white to light. Like all the other types of opal, the play of colour, brightness and pattern is important.
Some opals don't like labels. They don't fit clearly into a category, hence the need for descriptions like semi crystal which may be partly transparent. Occasionally we find darker crystal opal too.
The most important thing to look for in an opal - is one that speaks to you!
